All aboard the Duyfken Replica

Today we take on a nautical theme with a look at the wonderfully built Duyfken Replica ship in the port city of Fremantle.

The original Duyfken ship was the first European ship to reach Australian shores in 1606 – just slightly before Captain Cook – to the tune of 164 years! Duyfken means “Little dove” in Dutch, where the original ship was built in the late 1500s.

The embarkation point for the Duyfken is located right behind the Little Creatures brewery at the very end of the walkway for Fisherman’s Boat Harbour. It really is a great way to imagine life on the original vessel nearly 400 years ago by taking the short journey out of the heads.

Being a foundation, the Duyfken relies on donations and the generosity of its patrons to keep going year after year as they have been doing since 1999. So when visiting Fremantle be sure to put a visit to the Duyfken replica ship high on the list. Ahoy Mateys!
